The weather was fantastic except for the wind... Spencer Farrington and Bob Ingle took off ahead of "Fast Forward" and all 3 of us struggled to get to Estes Point. Many light wind shifts, interspersed with "lulls" made for unexciting sailing. However, Bob and I did manage to eventually get around the turning buoy at the "Other Marina" .... Meanwhile "Encanto" called on channel 16 to suggest the race be redefined as " Let's see who is first to get back to the dock from our present positions "..... Bob was creeping along with his Genoa poled out  and we were trying to keep our asymmetric Spinnaker  filled by using the whisker pole too... "Encanto" was sitting in a hole at the time....
At this point the race committee chairman (me) started the diesel and motored over to the other boats (couldn't find Spencer) and delivered bottles of life saving liquids so the participants would not get dehydrated.... We kept going toward the dock as a DNF and began to open a few more of the life saving containers.... Soon the dock was filled with dehydrated  sailors....
The waning full moon added to the festivities and a good time was had by all!!!!
A great way to end the 2004 Lo-Stress season.............. Everybody was a winner.!!!
                             Thanks,     Gus

During this years series of Wednesday nite sailings we have had 17 different boats participate.  Six boats entered the first race on 7 April,   5 boats entered the 14 April & 19 May races and   4 boats entered the 12 May, 18 & 25 August, and 8 September races....       This race (# 21) didn't get started due to zero participants....  There is one more Wed Nite in Sept ( 29th )and l declare it to be the final Lo-Stress race of 2004..... (the 4 Wed. nite races scheduled for October are hereby cancelled .)

Your participation and support of these Lo-Stress races these past 5 years is appreciated........................Thanks,  GUS

Three boats registered, Gus ( Fast Forward ), Dan Brown ( Joy's Toy ) & Bruce Railey (Capri-22 )...In spite of the fabulous evening the wind went from nice to nothing... Spencer Farrington was seen heading south towards the bridge, Keith Ford's ( Happy Ours ) sailed to the other Marina and back  and Chuck Jacobus was out in his Melges-24 sailing circles around us...
To make a long story shorter, as darkness fell a number of boats motored back to the dock.... Except for Bruce who sailed to the other Marina and back in 162min : 40sec.    Dan and Gus  both had DNF's so Bruce wins the $6.00 pot.
Lo- Stress sailing conditions this summer have been from one extreme to another ...Too much wind, Thunder and Lightning , Too little wind....
At least , last night the Beer stayed cold..!!!!.......GUS

  September 8 results:
Four boats responded to the chance to sail in the perfect temperature and light breeze, however, the weather channel suggested that the wind would be in the 10 to 15 mph.... The wind went to zero at the fall of darkness.... Cam Marcus won his first lo-stress race on 5 May 04, but here he is again in his second race of the year and he wins this one too....
Cam's time was 2hrs: 01min which corrected to 92.68 min.
Bruce Railey was second with a time of 148.5 min which corrected to 120.18min.
Dan Brown was third with 2hrs and 55min  ...Corrected to 146.82min.
Gus & the Peterson's, sailing the high dollar Racing Sails, went full speed onto the hard bottom just West of Estes Pt. ......... Scoring a DNF

"Fast Forward"  attempted to Sail Free, Motor Free, Lurch and Rock Free, but we only went from STUCK to MORE STUCK....Glen Buckley, in his shallow draft Cat-22  with it's 2HP outboard motor, couldn't move us forward but did manage to turn us from a port tack to a  starboard tack attitude....Then along came the Marine Corps ( Semper Fidelis) Mark Giesing on his Melges - 24 ,"Devil Dog"....Mark jumped into the chest deep water and vainly attempted to Heave us up and off of the Lump that had us anchored..but to no avail....Then he suggested swinging the main boom out over him so he could grab it and haul his weight out on it and really heel the boat, which he did.... Of course then the wind came up and filled the sails, the Diesel was roaring and Mark, still hanging on to the end of the boom was planeing like a barefooted skier.......... Besides having the courage to help us, he also had the courage to leave his wife Karen and Joyce to sail his deeper draft Melges near by, which they did very well.... .... Many thanks to Mark and the "Devil Dog" Crew.............................. GUS...............

Four boats signed up to compete....The weather was great and the wind was pretty good till dark when it started to fade.....
Dan Brown sailed it in 119.9 min / 116.9 Tgt. = 1.03% performance.
      Bruce Railey  sailed    112.6 min / 99min Tgt.= 1.14%     "
      Spencer Farrington   -   97.45min / 84.7min Tgt.= 1.15%   "
      Gus covered the course - 103.25 min / 86.8min Tgt = 1.19%  "
There are about 10 more Wed. Nite sailings before the end of Daylight Savings Time..... I would like to suggest that we use the U S Sailing PHRF ratings in a  'time-on-distance" computation to figure the winner.... Since the Novice Race Program has started, using PHRF, perhaps some of the novice racers will be more apt to participate in the Lo-Stress racing on Wed. nites..... PHRF numbers for your sailboat can be obtained from Bob Ingle, or from Gus.............. Dan Brown wins the $8.00 pot..... See you next Wed.    GUS

The wind was fair and the temperature was ideal...Mario and Keith and Steve Raye took off ahead of us and Andy Shanks left the dock after we did..... The problem was that the "early birds" got the wind and Andy was not able to get in before darkness fell so DNF.... Steve did not sign up to compete ,but looked good when we crossed . Keith Ford in his SJ-28 recorded 106min. and with a Tgt.Time of  97min. had a 1.09%. Mario Aguirre's Cat-28 took 134.34 min. vs a tgt/time of 99.9 min.= 1.32% perf. Gus, sailing with a brand new asymetric spinnaker, required 124.75 min to get down and back vs a tgt/time of 86.8min =1.44% performance.... Andy was heading south as we were approaching the point  to Jibe the chute and head for the dock... We did keep the asymetric full at all times even though the wind hardly caused the wind cups to turn.....
      <<<<<<<<<<<<< Keith wins the $8.00 pot >>>>>>>>>>>>

Last weeks race results were calculated incorrectly.. Mark Giesing noted that l used only half the distance  to the other marina  which was true. The winner ( Bill Thomas) did not change, but  Fast Forward came in last  vs tied for 2nd. with Encanto as reported last week.....................................THANKS TO ALL........GUS

PS----Steve you should have signed up on the sheet.

Last night 3 boats took off under a cloudy sky with great winds and ideal temperature. The Aguirre's, Gustafson's and Bill Thomas  et.al. sailed between the two Marinas. The water was whitecapping but both legs were reaches, No tacking and No running. Jim Farrington was surfing some of his grandchildren on Tubes behind his J-27 while sailing under Main alone, and Chuck Jacobus was out in his Melges-24 sailing down toward the bridge.
          The course between the two marinas is 2.75 miles round trip and Thomas, with full Genoa and main, sailed it in 43.45 min.   Gus covered the course in 47 min. under a full Genoa and a reefed main.   Mario had 49.51 min. sailing under main alone. I tried to compute the results based on "Tgt.Time", using the ratio of the different distances between the South bridge and the Cedar Creek marina but Fast Foward came in last. Then l compared the 3 boats performance based on the PHRF "time-on-time" method and l still came in last place... Finally l used the PHRF method "time-on-distance"and Fast Forward tied with Mario's Encanto for 2nd place.{naturally this is the preferred way to compute the race results}
The corrected time for Thomas was 37.7min.  PHRF= 126sec/mi.   tcf.=5.77min
The corrected time for Gus was 40.8min     PHRF=135   tcf=8.66
The corrected time for Mario was 40.8min   PHRF=189   tcf=6.18
Bill Thomas wins the $6.00 pot in his San Juan-34..........................Thanks ,    GUS

On  Saturday July 31 the lake was at 531 ft.... The normal level is 522ft....Between 3 July and 10 July the lake receded 3 ft.....[526' to 523']---------------Based on this " drain rate "the lake today should be about 2 feet lower than the high of Saturday.    This would indicate there is a likelyhood of some difficulty in getting to our boats today....".Lets call the whole thing off " Until next week----Then let us sail the short course Esther suggested,to the other Marina and back.........Notice !!!!    If you do go out to your boats---bring some Bug Bombs and Ant spray...Jon said the bugs that had lived on the stone breakwater all got evicted and moved over to the boat dock and crawled up into the boats....Have Fun..GUS

July 21 results:
Three boats took off in a pleasant summer evening .Gail and Eric, in "Fast forward" would have been the 4th boat but due to a low battery the diesel would not start....

Keith Ford [SJ-28] had Bimini Bill and Chris Bame on board, Dan Brown [Cat-28] had the Aguirre's and German Chew as crew and Bruce Railey sailed with Mike Hagan and a few others...... Keith's Performance (148.25 min./ 97min.tgt.time)  = 1.528.     Bruce's performance (149.37min./ 99min.tgt.time)  = 1.509. Dan Brown's (174.23 min. / 118.6min.tgt.time) = 1.469.  A  6% difference in performance means close racing.... Dan Brown wins the $6.00 These slow races due to light / dying winds are no fun... Esther says that she and Mario favor a race  to the other Marina and back on the days that the wind is less than 10mph.......  Sounds good to me !!!   Any Objections ???       The "Turning Mark" near the other Marina shall be one of the "Caution Buoys"  in front of the "water take out tower"  (just South of the Marina entrance). I will mark on the "sign -in -sheet" in RED that the course will be the Short Course.... Thanks for coming out to race............... GUS

Race 10 had 3 boats signed up -Ingle, Aguirre, and Gustafson.  Two Melges-24's were out and Farrington was in his J-27 and was also headed toward the South Bridge... The wind and temperature were ideal, no wakes or whitecaps and no crazy wind shifts, just a great evening to be on the water....   Bob Ingle did the 8.3 miles in 111min for a 112% performance. Gus did it in 126min for a 145% performance, and Mario did the trip in 150min for 150% .................. Bob's winning was not a surprise, but GUS beat Mario----SURPRISE-SURPRISE !!!!    Guess it was because George Gustafson (absent from the lake these 1.5 years) was sailing "FastForward " and George's daughter Brittany and Gus were the excellent crew.....................Great evening to sail....Thanks, Gus
June 30 results:
In the interest of consistency, l hereby declare the Wed. 30 June 04 race a "washout"!!! Since there were 5 races to be sailed in the month of June , and Bob Ingle was the only boat to record a time last week (3hr. 01min.) ,  and there were storm conditions the first 3 weeks,.....l say "the He-- with it "....Perhaps we will be fortunate enough to be able to sail in the month of July.....Now if there happens to be sunshine tomorrow afternoon ....you have my permission to cuss me out  !!!!        GUS

Three boats took off in brisk winds with gusts to be over 20 per the Weather Channel... The fast time was recorded by Mr. Burnham in his 30ft Catalina (sail no. 19).... Since he had no previous times to base his Target Time on I went through the "Book" and assigned him a Tgt of 105min..... He sailed out first and recorded a time of 116min which gave him a performance of 110%.... His was the best % and won him the $6.00 pot.....  Jim Monroe sailed his first race of the year and recorded a time of 197min which gave a performance of 131%.   Fast Forward sailed it's 8th race of the year in 118.75min  for 137%... (I even sailed the Spinnaker and the Racing Main).... One can only assume that the boat, in spite of it's potential, is not being sailed well.........GUS

May 19 results:
Five boats entered in brisk winds that gusted all over the place. Mark Bryan sweetened the "pot" by donating his $9.00 winnings from last week and then raced off in his Melges 24 to tangle with Matt Mayo and Mark Giesing in their Melges'.... Nice gesture, Mark !!!  Keith Ford conscripted a motley crew from the dock and they looked out of place against the bright new main sail on his San Juan-28  .  The investment must have been good since "Happy Ours" was the winning performance of 106.18% (103min).   Butch Weinberg's Halberg-Rassey 34 had the fastest time of 93 min and was second in performance at 107.26%... E J Tews sailed 121 min (107.77%). Jim Atkinson sailed 125min (118.68%) and Gus and crew sailed in 108.51min (1.25%).  The "Sweetened"  pot of $19.00 goes to Keith Ford....           Thanks....Gus

May 12 results:
The wind was blowing in the15 to 20  range again and 4 boats entered and recorded times.   Spencer Farrington sailed his J-27 but did not enter.  He would have had a good time since he started after me, passed us after rounding the point and then finished well ahead of us.  However, Mark Bryan would have been a tough one to beat since he sailed his Melges-24 without a spinnaker  and covered the course in his Target Time. His time was 78min and 20 sec. which computes as 1.008%    He must have been planning part of the trip.   Second place went to Ralph Hewitt in his Ericson 33 with a time of 104.3 min (performance = 1.116% of target).   Third place went to Fast Forward with a time of 98.96 min which computes to 1.140% of target.     Fourth place went to Encanto with a finish time of 114.15 min (performance = 1.143% of target). Mark Bryan gets the $8.00 pot plus a $1.00 I owed him from the first race. Thanks for the turnout...maybe there will be more sailing when the wind moderates..   GUS

The wind was blowing strong again and Gail and l took off with a reefed main and an 85% jib...We left the dock at about 3:30 and were on the way back from Estes Point when the Encanto boat came past us headed to the bridge. Dan Brown was their expert crew member. When we docked, Jim Atkinson was rigging his BRAND NEW main sail for the reef on his Catalina 30,  and Cam was seen heading out with just the main up....Found Ralph Hewitt in the parking lot trolling for crew....guess he didn't succede 'cause he never started...can't say that sailing an Erickson 33 by oneself would have been much fun in that wind....
Cam sailed his S2 7.9 around in 105 min [1.15%]....... Mario had 122 min [1.22% ]...and Fast Forward sailed 108 min [ 1.24 %].....Jim DNF.........Ralph DNS
Cam wins the $8.00 pot  !!!!                     Thanks,   GUS

April 28 results:
l guess that the high winds and the threat of Tornados   kept the starting line smaller than usual....As it turned out Jon had guests from Steamboat, Co. that were delighted to sail in the race even tho ' we sailed with a reefed main and the 85% jib...With five adults on board  it was easier than last week in trying to keep the boat on an even keel...The guests had some experience sailing on Lake Dillon and said Joe Pool didn't have any wind shift's like they were used to seeing on Lake Dillon.....Even so- we did get the lee rail buried in the spume....Instead of doing goose winged jibes like last week l chose to wear-away like the old square rigged ships used to tack...ie. 270 degree turns vs. 90 degrees.....Perhaps some one may have seen us doing that comfortable manuever  and thought that we were totally out of control..."au contraire" ....Well we did sail to the bridge and back in less time than it took last week ,due in part to a less shifty wind, but the time was 108min.....By golly no one had a better time and so l claimed the first place prize.............Hope to see more boats out this coming Wednesday..
...................Lonesome Gus...............

April 21 results:

Three boats ventured out in 15-20 kt winds with gusts to 24 kts.  The Beat to the South bridge was tough and some 30 degree wind shifts were felt on numerous occasions.  Encanto [M. Aguirre ] had the quick time of 110.1 min and a performance of 110.2%.. Bruce Railey took second place at 125.45 min and 126.71%.... Fast Forward was prone to Broaching and Goose Wing Jibes and did the course in 115.55 min. in spite of registering 8.2kts on the GPS...A performance of 133.1% went with the more than 10 miles covered...
The $6.00 pot goes to Mario and Esther....
                                                    Thanks....GUS

April 14 results:
Five boats took off in a brisk wind that occasionally created whitecaps...Some of us thought we could set some new time records....Bob Ingle had his new Main on and Gus set up his symetrical spinnaker as as asymetrical ,hooked to the headfoil...The wind direction was straight up the lake , making the trip to the bridge a tacking ordeal that precluded any fast times....
Dan and Joy Brown had the best performance to their target time and took the $10.00 pot with 111.4%....their time was 132.1 min.
Bob Ingle ,who beat me by only 14 sec was second with a 116,5% performance....his time was 116.1min
The Aguirre's were 3rd. in performance at 132.6% and finished in 132.5min [ 24sec behind Dan]
Gus , in Fast Forward timed out in 116.33 min and a 134% performance
Bruce Railey in his Capri-22 sailed in 143.7min for a 145% time....
A good time was had by all,....if you know of others who have a boat but are reluctant to "RACE" invite them to join in....
.............................................Thanks,    GUS

Can't imagine that we are starting the Lo-Stress series for the fifth year....One has to wonder where the time goes....Six boats came out in what turned out to be great sailing conditions....Great wind and t-shirt temperatures..........Mark Bryan showed up with a sexy "see-thru" main on his Melges 24 and even with a motley crew picked up on the dock , was able to record the fastest time ever for the round trip to the south bridge and back....Congratulations !!!!  78.25 min will be a challenge for the other 3 Melges...    E.J.Tews however, took first place with a time of 124min which was .868% of his target time...[his next race will be scored against a Tgt. Time of 133.5 min]....Mark took second place with a .914% number..His Tgt.Time was the average of the other Melges that had raced in prior years... Keith Ford , in his SJ-28 sailed 93.66min. for 3rd at .949%....Ralph Hewitt blew the cobwebs off his Erickson  and recorded 93.05min.for a .995% performance........The Aguirre's in the Cat-28 had 103.5min. for a performance of 1.074 %....Gail and I sailed 94.5min and thought that we had done quite well only to find that we came in LAST at 1.074%      [l must find a secret way to adjust my Tgt.time without the other's knowing it...]...............Thanks for the good turnout...Remember, that your friends who may not be members of LCYC, are welcome to participate in these Friday evening Races........................GUS.... [FAST FORWARD]
