This is the perfect opportunity for non-racers and
potential racers to get their feet wet and see how their boat
speed stacks up against others without the stress of formal
races. See

April 10 Results:
Revised
finish is: Keith
Ford in HAPPY OURS Took first place @ .9917% of target......
Cam Marcus was 2nd @ 1.008% of Tgt...... Bob Ingle at 1.059%
was 3rd... Wag sailing Mithrander, was1.149%.......... Mario
and Esther were 5th @ 1.157%............. and Gus was last
@1.161% of the target time.......Spencer "picked up"
400yds short of the finish line.... Shanks tgt was
2hr-45min but didn't sign in, but neither did Jim Monroe who
had a tgt time of 2hrs-57min. and may still be out there...The
evening was great 70 degree weather but the wind wimped out at
about 6:30........ Thanks.... 10 boats signed in and 2 or 3
more were seen out there Good race ...$20.00 goes to
Keith....... Next time l will take the money when l leave, but
will leave the sign-in sheet on the F1-dock box in a plastic
cover in case it rains or we have heavy dew..... still haven't
heard the finish time of John Wroble.......GUS
April 17 Results:
We 7
Gustafson's sailed under cloudy skies and a brisk wind that
lasted... In spite of my famous crew we were not able to keep
the spinnaker out of the water. Although we seined no fish,
we gave the chute a good washing......... Six boats put $$
into the pot ,but it looked like there were 4 or more other
boats out there. My Girl and Midnight Express were two that l
recognized.... John Timofte, sailing Brian's Hunter 30, was
assigned a target time of 136min (same as Pachecek's Newport
28, based on similarity)........The fastest trip time was Cam
Marcus @ 96.3 min, tgt = 105.6.... Gus was 97.8 min, tgt =
100.6..... Chris Bame @ 118.2 min, tgt = 111.4..... Dan Brown
@126.9min, tgt = 129.8.... John had 127.8 min, tgt = 136...
and Andy Wagner @132.3 min, tgt = 151.8... Based on this
Andy's % was 0.87 and took the $12.00pot..... %'s - Cam =
0.912, Jon = 0.94, Gus = 0.972, Dan = 0.978, and Chris =
1.061....... I think l saw Andy flying a reefed main.... After
a few more races l will review the target times and revise
them if it appears (that reads lowered)....... Gus

5
boats signed up and southerly winds at the start were 3-5mph
then dropping to ZERO at the south bridge....Then WAMMO a
strong 180 degree wind shift, with
reported gusts over 30mph hit
us all.... Some
rolled up their jibs, some sailed with bare headstays and some
did a little of each..... It
was a rough ride from the bridge back to Estes point but then
a "fast" reach to the Marina.... Thomas, in a
"borrowed or stolen" Pearson Flyer kept his Jib up
and had the fastest elapsed time... However,
Hewitt in his Erickson 33 had the slowest time but the highest
"target time" (based
on the previous owners sailing in the Lo Stress in
2000)
and had a 1.18% performance and gets the $10.00 pot....
His
"tgt time"
will be adjusted..... Also,
since the Pearson Flyer was fastest and beat both Cam and Gus
his "tgt time" should be about what theirs is (ie
100min).......
Cam was 3rd @ 1.53%, Dan Brown was 4th @ 1.58%, Gus was
@1.66%... Ingle did not sign in but had about the same
time as Gus (167min)
and mightn't
have beaten Cam for 3rd place.... Sailing
was a BLAST last nite !!!

Eight
boats put $ in the pot and the wind stayed brisk and
steady in direction... Mark
Bryan sailed the course in the shortest time of 88.25 min....
and
Cam Marcus
had 94.1.... The
rest of us took more than 101 min
out to the 115.3 min
that the Aguirre's new bottom job would allow... Steve Raye
had the best performance to target at 80%... Gene
Bain performed at 83%... Mark
Bryan at 87%... Cam
- 89%..Jaffre
- 95%.....
Steve and his O'Day 28 "Midnight Express"
wins the pot of $14.00 and a $2.00 IOU from Cam, but there is
also another IOU of $1.00 from Cam... Don't
think l should get involved in this one!!!!! As
you may recall the "Target Times" are based on the 3
best times over the 8.33 nm.
course.... Now
that we have 4 races completed, I
plan to review and revise as necessary.... The
new "Tgt Times" will be with the sign in sheet for
next Wednesday's race........... We
had a great sail for #4 race.............. GUS

Even
though the weather was threatening,
quite a few people showed up to sail.... l
think Mark Bryan (Mithrandir)
and Dan Brown (Joy

sailed with the Aguirres (Encanto)...
TEH
(Erickson
23)
and Gail Gustafson (Fast
Foward) sailed
with Hewitt (Alchemy)
.....Keith Ford (Happy
Ours)
and TNT with the Guinns were out there too,but TNT did not
register......... The
tornado watch that expired at 9pm was not a problem
"thank Goodness".... Mario
and Keith both sailed within 10% of their target
speeds, but
Hewitt sailed a lot faster than his, indicating
that due to a small data base (2
races)
his target needs to be adjusted............ Ralph
sailed 108.7min which is .689% of target..........
Keith,
at 109.85,
was .915% of target...........
Mario,
at 122.01min,

sailed their first Lo Stress race...
Six
boats entered and all boats lowered their Target

Ralph
Hewitt with a time of 92.7 min won his fourth race in a row...

$18.00 was in the pot and it was won by E. J. Tews in his
O'Day-25 with a target time of 125 min.... His elapsed time
was 198.26 min for 159%...... The two faster times were Gus in
"Fast Foward" @155.3 min and Hewitt in
"Alchemy" @ 179.2 min..... The "Encanto"
crew finished in 220 min and E. Casey in a 17foot Venture came
in at 247min.... Buckley in his "Summer Breeze"
Cat-22 finished in 254 min and probably would have done better
but claimed to have hit the south bridge..... He and his crew
got "rattled" when the passing cars started honking
their horns at them.... Fortunately they were able to start
their motor and power off the concrete into the north wind...
They were able to laugh at the situation in front of us
all at the Hot Dog cook out that Gail and Lanny put out......
Mallette in his Cat-22 did not record a finish time nor did
Keith Ford in "Happy Ours".... This only accounts
for 8 boats but the "cash" said there were 9
players...... The wind was fair at the start and nil at the
end... The threat of severe weather kept out of our face
allowing us to enjoy a cool evening........

Race 10 was sailed in a fair
wind, a great temperature, and with a lot of sails on the
water...... I counted at least 14 headed to the south
bridge, which included the 3 Melges 24's..... Seven boats
paid and five turned in finish times......... The fast
boat was Mithrander (M Bryan) at 92.2 min and he beat his
target time by 8 min for 92%..... Fast Foward (Gus) sailed
with 6 Gustafson's on board and completed in 96.5min for
104%..... Rapture (Thomas) sailed in 101 min for 102%.....
Alchemy (Hewitt) was 104.1 min for 99.6%...... and Amazing
Grace (Ingle) had 108 min time and a target of 107.7 min for
100.3% performance..... Steve Raye and the Aguirre's did not
record finish times.... Wrobel was out in his 32ft Erickson
as was the Pearson Flyer but they were only out for the
ride........ The $14.00 pot goes to Bryan and because all 5
finishers had fast times their Target Times (average of 3
lowest times) each computed lower ............ GUS

With
winds steady at 14 there was an abundance of boats out
enjoying the evening. Ten boats put money it the pot and at
least 10 other boats were out sailing to the south bridge
also.... Encanto
has been complaining of a too low target
time,
yet sailed so fast last nite as to lower it some more...
As
a matter of fact 7 of the 10 boats lowered their target
times.... The
fast boats were Mithrandir
(M
Bryan)
and Starlite
Express (Steve
Raye)
who each had times of 100.2 min.... The
winning boat however, was the 17 ft. Venture
(Casey)
at 124.3 min but a target
time of 150
min.....
Casey
gets the $20.00 pot.... Gus
sailed
Fast Foward with just his 155% genoa and,
although came in last on % performance,
the time was 103.2 min.... Mithrander
was 9th and Starlite
Express was 2nd....... Tom
and Dee Meyer's, in
their 28ft Cal "Encore,"
sailed for the first time in these Lo-Stress races......
They
just had a bottom job and with the
"supersonic" varnish on the top surfaces,
it
must have allowed them to finish in 105.1 min for 3rd
place.... Alchemy,
son
did have the quickest time,
and with his tarJacobus
was flying around the course in his Melges 24 and so was the
Pearson Flyer from the other marina....... Spencer
Farrington was seen trying out his (to
him)
J-27 with Bob as ballast...... The
temperature was ideal as was the steady
wind...................... GUS

Under the threat of bad weather ,the Fast Forward crew elected
to withdraw from the race and return to Gus and Julia's to
celebrate their 53rd anniversary...which was a blast......
Meanwhile, as the clock ticked on the weather improved, Keith
in his "Happy Ours" signed up and did the course in
his Target Time, 118min....... Keith said two other boats were
out there but since they had not signed in and not logged a
time .it was a hollow victory even though the wind was
steady.....................................The $4.00 pot went
to Keith..........................

Three boats raced and the Aguirre's in Encanto led to the
finish line in the best time of 120.5 min (115%
target).......... Dan Brown in his 28ft Catalina "Joy
Ride" was second at 132min (106% target)
..and said he would have passed Mario and Esther except they
kept making tactical moves which screwed up Dan's game
plan....... T.J.Tews in his O'day 25 "Jennifer Lea"
followed in 152min against his target time of 120min for a
score of 126%.......... Dan wins the $6.00
pot..................."NOTE"....FAST FOWARD has had
the Diesel pulled for rework and since there is a hole in the
bottom , where the drive leg used to be, will not be racing in
the Saturday series, and until I know that the patch is
watertight may miss another Lo Stress or two.................
Strange... 3 boats on the water for #12 Lo Stress...... 3
boats raced in the Sport boat race....... 3 boats in the A
fleet race ......... 3 boats raced in the B fleet........and 3
boats raced in Lo Stress #13. My
mother used to say "good things come in threes "

Seven boats signed up to
race on the hot day of July 10th... but only 5 actually got to
sail around the course, slowly, l might add......
with all of the heat the wind was poor to non existent......
That is except for Keith Ford and Andy Wagner who must have
started later since their times were much better than the
first three boats that left....... Andy 's time of 185.6 min
was second fastest and against his target of 137.2min he
had 135% perf for first place. Andy gets the $14.00
pot...................... Keith had the fastest trip time of
168.3 min vs his target time of 115 min for a 143% perf
and second place..... E.J.Tews had 248min at a perf. of
2.07%............ Ralph Hewitt had 219.7min at a perf. of
2.26%............. and the Aguirre.s did the course in 269min
at 2.57% performance............. Chris Bame did not start and
neither did Fast Foward........ We had the main up and were in
the process of checking the "Patch" for leaks
(where the diesel engine was mounted) when Gus was instantly
"hammered" with a total loss of vertical reference.
Dan Brown and Gail and my son Jon were fortunately there
to call 911 and get me taken care of................... Note
.... the Emergency crew from Grand Prairie was at the Marina
in only 6 min.... Jon was still on the phone talking to the
dispatcher, when we could hear the sirens....

Lars, Jon and l went to the lake intending to race if the boat
patch didn't leak..... However, when we got to the parking lot
it was obvious that the threat of bad weather and lightning
would cancel the race..... Dick Jaffre and the Aguirre's had
already signed up and they will get their money back...... One
boat was seen coming from the other marina, and was under full
sail, l presumed it was Thomas in his all weather San Juan -
34 "Rapture".......... The white caps were wild and
the wind was gusting a bunch.............. Thanks everyone for
showing up !!!!!................ GUS

Forgive
me .... I've
lost my data so that this will be a report based on my short
memory.... 7or
8 boats took off in a near no-wind condition....
Ingle,
Hewitt,
Martin
van Wolfswinkel, Dan
Brown, Chris
Bame, Gene
Bain, Preston,
and Fast Foward....The wind did improve as the evening wore
on.... Martin
said he was going to start late since he expected the wind to
pick up later..... It
must have since the winning time was 92min by Martin's
J-22 Lone Star (He
gets the $13.00 pot). Most
of the rest of us were up near 2 hours or more time......
I
had two watchs and both failed... one
did say l spent more than 1 hour just to get to the
bridge..... The
fact that the moon was FULL made the evening even more
pleasent..... WHO
is Preston and what kind of a boat did he sail????.........See
you all tomorrow...... GUS

Eight boats signed up but the pot was only $12.15 and was won
by Spencer Farrington, with a time of 97.6min... This was his
first Lo Stress race in his "new" J-27. Gus was
second fastest at 104mim and took 7th place............. Bob
Ingles was 3rd fastest at 107min. and took 4th........ Ralph
Hewitt took 108.3min for 6th............. Keith Ford took
110min and got third place..... Martin van Wolf-- sailed
110min also and took 8th place............ Dan Brown
took second place with a time of 120,9min..... and E.J.Tews at
130 min took 5th place.............. The wind was pretty good
and the air temperature was great...... Of the 8 boats, five
all finished within 6min of each other which l think is pretty
good for an 8.33 nautical mile race........ ........Thanks

Gene
Bain in his Capri 22 (Feels

took 4th place with a time of 190min @1.59% and Dan Brown (Joy
Ride)
had 200min.
@1.64%
of his tgt.................
It
was tough racing with near calm at the start followed by
'Brisk winds'
as
we approached the point, followed by a fast run down to the
bridge...... The beat back to Estes Point was in whitecapping
wind, then a heavy rain squall, then No Wind, then a 180
degree shift followed by an occasional calm, depending on
where you were at the time......... Those who were sailing
south when the first 3 boats were headed north must have
gotten into failing winds that caused DNF on several of the
last boats........... The GOOD news is that my "sun
top" got a good washing...... the BAD news is that Julia
got her "hair wet" while Gail and Jon were trying to
get her below deck with the boat heeling 20 degrees.... We all
had a great sail and getting out of our wet clothes was even
better.............. Bob Ingle also sailed. He started first
and finished first but did not enter.... He and Bill flew
Spinnakers........... GUS August

The rain at my house was
coming down in buckets at 5pm..... We elected to stay home and
eat shrimp and sip Martinis .......... This am l went out to
see if any stout hearted sailors really did go out in their
boats................ no one else had signed up and there was
no evidence of a rain at the dock.......... the decking was
dry and the parking lot had no water in it or on it.........
NEW SUBJECT....... Ralph Hewitt was bemoaning the fact that
our membership has gotten smaller in numbers and was asking
how to enthuse more people to join............ Lets tell
everyone we can that people could ride on some of the
Lo-Stress boats as interested passengers or as novice
crew...... the dock departure time could be established and
the participating boats could be posted ............. we could
also offer some snacks at the Party Mark after the sailing so
people could ask questions or whatever............. it doesn't
have to be just the Lo-Stress boats ... many other boats go
out on Wed just for the fun of it....Unfortunately, Fast
Forward can not be one of the passenger carrying boats since l
have a full time chore when Julia is on
board........................ Gus................ August

The
race was sailed in a steady breeze from the SSE followed by a
full moon......... 9
boats signed up and several more sailed but did not sign
in.... $18.00
was in the pot and it was won by a "Stranger" boat,
an
S-2 7.9, called "T-N-T"....... Since
the Guinns only sailed in the short course races of 2000 and
2001 their TGT time was based on an extrapolation...
This
was their first "long" course and they sailed it in
97min. which
was 85% of their Tgt....... Cam
in his S-2 7.9 had 93min and Keith in his SJ-28 was
94min...... However
Spencer in his J-27 had the fast time of
87.4min........"Fast Forward" using only the
Technora 155% genoa was close to Spencers speed upwind but on
the downwind leg both he and Cam flew ahead of me.........
Keith
in "Happy Ours" was
2nd at 86%, Spencer
was 3rd at 89%......... Bain
was 4th @101%, Cam
at 102% was 5th.... Wagner
@ 105% was 6th... "Encanto"
at 1.10% was 7th... and Gus was last at !.16%...... Martin

broke
his tow line,
lost
his favorite hat overboard, and then stepped on his sun
glasses.....(good
deeds are always rewarded)..........
Fast
Forward

Last night 7 boats were signed up, but l counted more than 12
sails headed to or from the south bridge.... A cluster of 6
boats, all trying to get around the turning buoys at the
bridge, was a sight to behold........ Pretty sunset at the
same time... l think Fast Forward was the last to start but
was sailing fast all the way to the final turn at Estes
Pt..... This is where the fleet stopped due to the wind fading
to ZIP.... With all the lights on all of the boats it reminded
one of a traffic jam on l-20......... However, Martin van
Wolfswinkle (J-22) managed to drift home in 2 hrs-20 min. and
took the $13.00 pot with a 153% performance to
target........... Glyn Buckley in his Cat-22 logged 4 hours to
complete and 3 boats chose not to record their times.... Fast
Forward was second fastest at 158.9 min (172%) and Ralph
Hewitt was third at 169.4min (174%).......... Bob Ingle was on
his way back from the bridge when, it was reported that he
turned around to rescue an out-of-gas 30 something power
cruiser...... It wasn't reported whether the "30
something" was the length of the boat or the age of the
damsel in distress......... I guess that if the finish line
had been Estes Point, Spencer Farrington would have won in his
J-27.... He was last seen in daylight "hauling"
north about half way between the point and the Bridge...... It
was a nice evening, good winds at the start and fun sailing
for awhile......... Thanks.... GUS

The evening was perfect for the 5 boats that signed up...
The
wind was good until about sunset when it began to fade
away.... The
$10.00 pot was won by Spencer Farrington who sailed his J-27
to a 90.4 min time
(tart
was 92.9)......
Gene
Bain and his Capri-22 came in at 122.2min (target
was119)
for a performance
of 102.7%
of target.......
Gustafson
in the Laser -28 came in at 95.4 min which was 103.1% of his
target time.........The Aguirre's in their Catalina -28 had a
time of 113.7min which was a 108% performance.....
Keith
Ford in his San Juan -28 may still be out there, since he did
not sign in with a finish time...however if he did finish with
a time of 101.3min or better he could tie or beat Spencer....
I
will with hold handing out the $$$$ until l hear
from Keith............. Spencer
said he had been practicing ... He
said that Tuesday nite he sailed the course in 85min....
Chuck
in his Melges-24 and several other boats, like
Steve Raye in his 28ft O-Day (Starlite
Express)

From
Gail:
Before he flew off to Connecticut this morning for his High
School reunion and family visit, Poppa Gus calculated the
actual times over target times for the three participants in
the NEXT-TO-LAST Lo Stress race of 2002. The races
resume in the Spring following the return of DST. The
Aguirres reported that seven boats were on the lake in the
light air and that it was a beautiful evening for sailing,
although cool once the sun set. Three boats signed in for
the race, and "He's ba-a-ack!" Just when you
thought it was safe to go in the water! Mark Bryan takes
the first place honors and $6 pot with 121 minutes/ 91.9
target for 132%. In second place, Ralph Hewitt logged
149.8 minutes/ 97.3 target for 154% and the Aguirres and their
international, articulate and world event-discussing crew
placed third with 175 minutes/ 104.8 target for 167%.
Gus would like to get all of this year's racers together at
the party mark for an informal gathering sometime soon.
See ya'll next week!
Summary:
Race # 26 was sailed on 16 Oct.
2002.......

of 121min....

149.8min...

For

#22.................. Fast
Forward

This
completed the third year of leisurely racing and it seemed
that all the boats that have been racing this series have
ended up sailing faster than the two previous years...........
There
were no reported accidents and no protests thus,
there were no "stressful"
situations
at the start or the finish line..................
For
next year ,if there is still a good turnout of boats, we
should have closer finish "performance ratios" since
the data sheets now contain numerous finish times on which to
compute the TARGET TIMES for each boat.............
I
had a fun time, l hope you all did too.........
Thanks,
Gus
